Sherrill administration announces $1.2M grant for Phillipsburg sinkhole repairs

Gov. Mikie Sherrill and New Jersey Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Priya Jain announced a $1.2 million state grant Friday to help Phillipsburg repair a road damaged by sinkholes that opened earlier this year.

The funding will support repairs to Summit Avenue, where two sinkholes formed at the intersection with Lewis Street on Feb. 16.

State officials said temporary roadway repairs have already been completed while additional work is underway to address damaged infrastructure and stabilize nearby homes.

“This is what government does – bringing resources to an area where we need to make people whole after an unexpected calamity,” Sherrill said. “We are providing $1.2 million to get the permanent fix in for this road to make sure people are kept safe and to make sure they are able to get back to work and get back in their homes.”

Officials believe the sinkholes may have been caused by aging infrastructure and a collapsed pipe, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Aqua New Jersey is currently repairing a damaged water main in the area. Eight homes near the sinkholes showed signs of structural instability and were deemed unsafe for occupancy. Residents of those homes have been displaced while officials determine whether the properties can be safely reoccupied.

Additional tests are planned to assess the stability of the ground and determine what further steps are needed before residents can return.

Once the site is stabilized, utility services will be restored to affected homes and the road will undergo full reconstruction, including repaving and replacement of sidewalks.

Jain said the state’s local aid program allows the transportation department to quickly assist municipalities facing unexpected infrastructure problems.

“When the unforeseen happens and the safety of the public is at risk, the New Jersey Department of Transportation leverages its strong partnerships, quick action and access to resources to restore safe access for motorists, residents and businesses,” Jain said.
