Moral clarity in the present tense: Faith leaders in New Jersey and across the country call on Governor Murphy to sign immigrant protections

Governor Phil Murphy
Office of the Governor
State of New Jersey

Dear Governor Murphy,

We write as faith-rooted organizations and faith leaders in New Jersey and across the country with grief that is holy and resolve that is unshakable.

As we enter Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observance week, we are not called to nostalgia. We are called to moral clarity in the present tense. This is one of those moments when delay becomes its own decision. New Jersey can choose courage now by signing these bills in full, as-is.

We begin by naming the lives of New Jersey residents we have lost: Jean Wilson Brutus and Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, New Jerseyans whose lives were taken in a cruel detention-and-deportation machine that treats human beings as disposable.

We grieve them as neighbors, not numbers. We honor them as beloved, not disposable. And we say their names because silence is how harm multiplies.

We also grieve Renee Nicole Good, murdered by an ICE agent in Minneapolis as she served as a legal observer, bearing witness while people exercised their freedoms. That is sacred work. No one should be executed for showing up to protect the community.

Governor Murphy, our communities are under attack, and in New Jersey it is showing up in real time. And we do not have to imagine what “the worst” could look like. It is already happening here.

In Morristown, a high school student was taken by masked and armed agents while doing his family’s laundry. In that same sweep, a Morristown father was snatched on his way to pick up food for himself and his 6-year-old daughter, his child later found alone and crying, searching for him. In Bridgeton, people waiting for food assistance were detained near a Salvation Army site. In Fairview and North Bergen, a 73-year-old grandmother was tackled by ICE at a bus stop. And outside Delaney Hall in Newark, during a protest, Faith in New Jersey leaders witnessed ICE break a protester’s arm by throwing them to the ground.

These are not hypotheticals. This is New Jersey. Right now.

This is what it looks like when fear is used as policy. People are afraid to take their children to school. Afraid to seek medical care. Afraid to go to court. Afraid to report abuse. Afraid to worship. Afraid to ask for help. And when fear governs, the powerful call it order. We call it cruelty.

This is what authoritarianism looks like in plain sight. It depends on compliance in advance, harm becoming routine while conscience goes quiet. It feeds on scapegoating. It tries to divide us by race, language, faith, and country of origin so that working families stay isolated while power consolidates at the top. We reject that strategy. We refuse that future.

And Governor, you know this. As former United States Ambassador to Germany, you understand that authoritarianism is not only built through force. It is built through permission, through silence, through leaders choosing what is convenient over what is courageous. It grows when people say, “This is not my problem,” until it becomes everyone’s nightmare.

New Jersey does not have to be that kind of place.

In our faith traditions, love of neighbor is not a feeling. It is a commandment. It is a practice. And in this moment, it must also be a policy choice. Freedom means being able to show up for your life, your family, and your community without hesitation.

It means parents can take their children to school, people can seek health care, survivors can ask for help, families can worship, loved ones can grieve in community, and workers can report abuse without fear that everyday life will be used to punish them or separate them from the people they love.

That is why we are calling on you to sign the immigrant protections package into law together and in full, as-is, with no carve-outs and no weakening changes that leave people exposed:

• S5036/A6308, the Safe Communities Act
• S5037/A6309, the Privacy Protection Act
• S5038/A6310, Strengthening Trust Between Law Enforcement and Immigrant Communities, codifying the Attorney General Directive

The Legislature has passed these bills. They are on your desk.

We also want to name what we know you may be weighing: fear that signing these bills will provoke retaliation, increase raids, or make New Jersey a target. Governor Murphy, that fear is exactly how authoritarian power grows. It expands when leaders hesitate, when protections are delayed, when people are asked to accept harm in advance.

And we are not asking you to do this alone. Faith communities across New Jersey and across the country are ready to meet this moment with faith-rooted care and accompaniment, anchored in trusted community relationships, so fear does not isolate our neighbors and harm does not go unseen.

And we will continue to stand with our communities and work with the next administration to uphold the standards of dignity, safety, and the freedom to love our neighbors.

Signing these bills does not give ICE new power. It draws clear lines around what New Jersey will and will not allow its own systems to be used for. If federal authorities choose escalation, that is a federal choice. Your responsibility is to protect New Jerseyans from being turned into collateral damage.

Make no mistake: the nation is watching. Faith leaders from across the country, including our partners at ISAIAH in Minnesota, are watching because what happens in New Jersey will either model courage or model surrender.

New Jerseyans are brave, and we are choosing to do what is right in the face of authoritarianism. Do not take that choice away. Sign these bills and leave a legacy that says you truly cared for our neighbors—not only in speeches, but in the decisions that protect human lives, even in your last moments as governor.

Governor Murphy: We are calling on you to sign these bills, without conditional amendments or delays.

We cannot bring back Jean Wilson Brutus, Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, or Renee Nicole Good. But we can draw a line right now. We can protect families in New Jersey. We can set a standard that other states can follow.

To every person living with fear tonight, especially immigrant neighbors and families: you are not alone. We see you. We are with you.

May their memories be a blessing. May they also be a summons.
