Donor transparency

The Jersey Vindicator is committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization in order to protect the integrity of our journalism.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services, or opinions.

The Jersey Vindicator accepts gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations to help with our general operations, the coverage of specific topics, and special projects in order to further our mission to serve the information needs of residents of the Garden State. 

When we receive funding for a particular story or series, that relationship is disclosed at the bottom of the story. When we report on an individual or organization that has donated to The Jersey Vindicator in the past, we will make note of the donation in the story. 

As a fiscally sponsored nonprofit corporation in New Jersey that operates as a public trust and has a pending 501(c)(3) application, we do not pay certain taxes. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.

Our news judgments are made independently and are not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. We do not give supporters the right to assign, review, or edit content.

We make public all revenue sources and donors who give $5,000 or more per year. 

As a news nonprofit, we avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources, government entities, political parties, elected officials, and candidates seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence. We reserve the right to reject or return donations if our board of directors determines that there is a conflict of interest. 

The Jersey Vindicator has received startup funding through a grant from the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium, but the consortium, its funders, its employees, and its board members have no influence over editorial content and do not review our content before publication. Our board of directors and our advisory council have no editorial influence and do not review or approve stories before publication.
